Karana Question and Answer
Q.1. What is Karan?
Answer: Karan is half of the date. There are two Karanas in a date – first forenoon (from morning to afternoon) and second for afternoon (from afternoon to night). A total of 11 types of Karanas are considered in the Panchang.
Q.2. How many Karanas are there in total?
Answer: There are 11 Karanas – Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitil, Gar, Vanij, Vishti (Bhadra), Shakuni, Chatushpad, Nag, Kimastugn
Q.3. What is the importance of Karana?
Answer: Every Karana has its own auspicious and inauspicious effects. Such as – Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitil, Gar, Vanij – are considered auspicious.
Vishti (Bhadra) – is considered inauspicious, no new work should be started at this time.
Shakuni, Chatushpad, Nag, Kimastugn – are special/stable Karanas, they are used in specific works.
Q.4. Why is Bhadra Karana (Vishti) considered inauspicious?
Answer: Auspicious works such as marriage, mundan, griha pravesh etc. are considered forbidden during Bhadra period. There are obstacles in the works done at this time.
Q.5. In which Karana auspicious works can be done?
Answer: It is best to do auspicious work in Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitil, Gar, Vanij Karanas.
These Karanas are considered best for works like marriage, housewarming, naming ceremony, starting a business, travel etc.
Q.6. Which are the stable Karanas?
Answer: There are 4 stable Karanas – Shakuni, Chatushpad, Nag and Kimastugn. These come on special dates and are useful in special religious/tantric works.
Q.7. What is the relation between Karana and Muhurta?
Answer: While finding the Muhurta, not only the date but also the Karana is seen. If the Karana is inauspicious (like Bhadra), then auspicious works are not done in that Muhurta.
