Translation of the Mantra We meditate on the three-eyed Shiva, who nourishes and promotes the sweet fullness of life. As the cucumber breaks free from its stem, may we be free from death, not immortality.

The Mahamrityunjaya mantra is a very famous and powerful mantra of Lord Shiva, which is chanted to get rid of the fear of death and diseases. This mantra is found in the Rig Veda and is also called the "Tryambakam Mantra". It is recited to protect from dangers and to wish for longevity.

Meaning

Om Tryambakam Yajamahe: We worship the three-eyed One (Lord Shiva).

Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam: Who is the source of the fragrance and nourishment of life.

Urvarukamiva Bandhanan: Just as a cucumber (melon) is separated from the vine without any damage.

Mrityormukshiya Maamritaat: May we be freed from the bondage of death and attain immortality.

This mantra is considered to be very effective for health, protection and longevity, and is chanted to overcome difficulties and adversities of life.
