In Hinduism, Sankashti Chaturthi, which occurs every month, is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. When this Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday, it is called Angarki Sankashti, while each Sankashti is also known by a specific name. This time it is being celebrated as Vakratunda Sankashti Chaturthi, dedicated to the Vakratunda form of Ganesha.
Worship Method
- Breath in the morning, wear clean clothes, and install an idol of Ganesha.
- Chant "Om Vakratundaya Namaha" 108 times.
- Offer red flowers, durva (sunflower), modaks, and fruits.
- Fast throughout the day and break the fast after moonrise by worshipping Ganesha.
Vrat Katha
Once, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were resting on Mount Kailash. Goddess Parvati asked Ganesha to guard the gate and prevent anyone from entering. Just then, Lord Shiva arrived and tried to enter. Ganesha, as per her mother's orders, stopped him. Enraged, Shiva beheaded Ganesha. Later, at the request of Goddess Parvati, Lord Vishnu brought an elephant's head and revived Ganesha. That day was Chaturthi Tithi, and since then, this fast has become famous as Sankashti Chaturthi. Ganesha's Vakratunda form is considered to be the remover of obstacles, the remover of all obstacles.
