The fast of Thursday (Guruvar) is dedicated to Lord Brihaspati Dev (Guru Dev). This fast is observed for good luck, knowledge, prosperity, and well-being of the family. Brihaspatidev is considered the Guru of the Gods, and with his grace all the troubles of life are removed.

Thursday Vrat Katha

The Thursday fast is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Brihaspati Dev. This fast is considered very auspicious in Hinduism and by observing it, wealth, property, happiness, peace, and family prosperity is attained. Wishes are fulfilled by listening and following the Vrat Katha.

Vrat Katha

It is a matter of ancient times. A poor Brahmin lived in a village. His wife was very religious and devout. She used to observe fast every Thursday and worship Lord Vishnu. There was poverty and suffering in their house, but there was no lack in her devotion. One day, the Brahmin said to his wife, "You observe fast every Thursday, but the condition of our house is not changing. We should do something else." To this the Brahmini replied, "God is testing us. We should be patient." One day, Lord Vishnu came to the Brahmin's house in the form of a sadhu. He said, "Daughter, I am pleased with your fast. I have come to help you." The sadhu explained the method and story of the fast to the Brahmini in detail. The Sadhu's Advice The sadhu said, "You should observe the fast every Thursday in the following manner:
  1. Take a bath in the morning and wear yellow clothes.
  2. Worship Lord Vishnu and Brihaspati Dev.
  3. Worship the banana tree and offer jaggery and gram.
  4. Donate to the poor and Brahmins.
  5. Do not consume sour things on the day of the fast."
The sadhu said while leaving, "If you observe this fast with faith and devotion, poverty and suffering will go away from your house."

Effect of the fast

The Brahmini started following the rules told by the sadhu. Slowly the condition of their house started changing. By the grace of Lord Vishnu, happiness, peace and wealth came into their lives. After some time, the Brahmin and his wife told the glory of this fast to other people of the village. Since then, this fast became popular in the entire village and whoever observed it, all his wishes were fulfilled. By observing this fast, wealth, happiness, peace, and satisfaction are attained.

Method of Thursday fast

  1. Rules of fasting:
    1. Keep fast on Thursday and wear yellow clothes.
    2. Keep the house clean and worship Lord Jupiter.
    3. Avoid cutting nails and washing hair.
  2. Worship material:Idol or picture of Lord Jupiter, yellow flowers, sandalwood, gram lentils, jaggery, bananas.
  3. Worship method:
    1. After taking bath in the morning, install the idol of Brihaspatidev.
    2. Offer yellow sandalwood, flowers, and jaggery-gram.
    3. Chant the mantra "Om Brim Brihaspataye Namah".
    4. Listen to the story and do aarti.
    5. Feed the poor and Brahmins and give donations.
