The first day of Sharad Navratri is considered the beginning of Goddess worship. On this day, Ghatasthapana (the ritual of setting up the earthen pot), also known as Kalash Sthapana (the sacred thread of the Kalash), is performed. Kalash Sthapana marks the beginning of Navratri worship and must be performed at an auspicious time.
Ghatasthapana Method
- Barley/wheat is sown in an earthen pot.
- A water-filled Kalash is placed on it, containing mango leaves and a coconut.
- The Kalash is worshipped as a symbol of Goddess Durga.
Mata Shailputri Puja
- On the first day, Goddess Shailputri is worshipped. She is the daughter of the mountain king Himalaya and is considered the first goddess of Navratri.
- Red flowers, rice grains, roli (vermilion powder), and sandalwood are offered to Goddess Shailputri.
- Reciting the Durga Saptashati and Shailputri Stotra is considered auspicious.
