Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana) is the initial and most important ritual of Navratri. It is also called Kalash Sthapana or Ghata Sthapana. Navratri begins with Ghatasthapana, in which Goddess Durga is invited and seated in the Kalash. This ritual is a symbol of Shakti worship and the Kalash is believed to be the abode of the gods during the entire Navratri.

- Date: Wednesday, 24 September 2025
- Festival: First day of Sharadiya Navratri
- Shubh Muhurat (Sthapana): 06:15 am to 08:45 am
- Abhijit Muhurat: 12:00 pm to 12:45 pm (if morning Muhurat is not available)
Importance of Ghatasthapana
- Ghatasthapana invokes Goddess Durga.
- The Kalash is believed to be the abode of Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh, Navgrah and Saptakul deities.
- Devotees worship the Kalash throughout Navratri and pray for happiness, prosperity and peace in their homes.
- From this day, the worship of nine forms of Maa Durga begins.
Method of Ghatasthapana (Step by Step)
- Take a bath in the morning and clean the house and prepare the place of worship.
- Sow barley on an earthen platform.
- Fill Gangajal in a copper or earthen pot.
- Put roli, swastika and betel nut on the pot.
- Wrap the coconut in a red cloth and place it on top of the pot.
- Decorate the pot with mango leaves or Ashoka leaves.
- Invoke Goddess Durga and perform Ghatasthapana with chanting mantras.
- Worship the pot methodically throughout Navratri and light the eternal flame.
Things to keep in mind during Ghatasthapana
- Always perform Ghatasthapana in an auspicious time.
- Do not perform Ghatasthapana in a polluted or impure place.
- While sowing barley, remember Maa Durga in your mind.
- Do not let the water in the Kalash become impure during the entire Navratri.
