Bengal Vijayadashami – Significance, Tradition And Vijayadashami Celebration
Bengal Vijayadashami (Bijoya Dashami) marks the end of Durga Puja and is celebrated with great fervor in Bengal. This day is the farewell of Maa Durga, when devotees immerse the goddess in water and wish each other.
This day is called the festival of victory, because on this day Lord Shri Ram established the victory of Dharma by killing Ravana. In Bengal, the five-day festival of Durga Puja (from Shashthi to Dashami) is celebrated in a very grand manner and on the day of Dashami, the message of 'Bijoya' (victory) is spread by bidding farewell to the mother.
Traditions of Bengal Vijayadashami
- Goddess Visarjan: The idol of Maa Durga is immersed in a river or sea with a procession.
- Sindoor Khela: Married women apply sindoor to each other and pray to Goddess Durga for the long life of their husbands and family.
- Bijoya Sandesh: People feed sweets to each other saying 'Shubho Bijoya' and take blessings from elders.
- Food and cultural programs: On this day, special dishes are prepared in every house and people increase mutual interaction.
