Story of Masik Karthigai

Once upon a time, Goddess Parvati expressed her desire to have a son from Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva accepted Goddess Parvati's prayer and created six divine sparks with his divine power. These sparks fell into a lake called Saravanapoyi and from there six beautiful boys were born. These boys were full of divine radiance and power. Goddess Parvati collected all those boys and merged them into a single boy by taking them in her embrace. Thus, Lord Murugan (Karthikeya) was born. The six-faced form of Lord Murugan symbolizes this event. Lord Murugan was born on the day of Karthigai nakshatra, so this day is celebrated as Karthigai Deepam. Karthigai Deepam means "Lamp of Karthigai," and this festival is celebrated to worship and adore Lord Murugan by lighting lamps.
