Maharaja Agrasen Jayanti is the main festival of the Agrawal community and the Vaishya community. It is celebrated as the birth anniversary of the great social reformer and kind ruler Maharaja Agrasen ji.
Agrasen ji had made equality, non-violence, trade and charity the basic mantra of life in his kingdom.
Biography of Maharaja Agrasen
Maharaja Agrasen was a great social reformer and people-loving ruler of ancient India. He was born in the Suryavanshi Kshatriya clan. He founded the Agraha city (Hisar region of present-day Haryana). His wife Maharani Madhavi was a princess of the Naga dynasty.
Agrasen ji gave importance to trade, peace and service by renouncing war and violence in his kingdom. He divided the society into 18 ganas, which later formed 18 gotras of the Agrawal society. His most famous policy was "one brick and one rupee". According to this policy, when a new family settled in the city, every family would give it one brick and one rupee. This would have provided him with both home and business.
He was a devotee of Lord Shri Ram and Shri Krishna and was in favour of non-violence and equality. Due to his ideals, the Agrawal community is still known for cooperation, brotherhood and charity.
The Government of India issued a postage stamp in his honour and heritage like Agrasen ki Baoli in Delhi keeps his memory alive. Maharaja Agrasen is not only considered an ideal king but also a symbol of humanity and service.
