Astrology has a very important place in Hinduism. It is also called "Vedic Astrology", because its origin is in the Vedas and Vedangas. This knowledge is the science of understanding the time and movement of planets and knowing their effect. The main purpose of studying astrology is to understand the effect of planets and constellations on a person's life and find solutions to problems. It is considered a scripture that guides life.

Types of Astrology

Vedic astrology can be mainly divided into the following types:
1. Siddhant Jyotish
  1. It is also called "Mathematics Astrology".
  2. In this, astronomy and methods of calculation are studied.
  3. It determines the position and movement of the Sun, Moon, planets and constellations.
  4. Panchang (Hindu calendar) is made on this basis.
2. Hora Jyotish
  1. It is called “Personal Astrology”.
  2. It is the prediction based on the horoscope (Janam Patrika) of the individual.
  3. It is the most popular type and analyzes the health, education, marriage, career etc. by studying the influence of planets.
  4. Sub-divisions of Hora Jyotish:
    1. Jataka Jyotish: Study of individual horoscope.
    2. Prashna Jyotish: Study of planetary positions to answer a particular question.
    3. Muhurta Jyotish: Determination of auspicious time.
    4. Varta Jyotish: Estimation of time of particular events.
3. Samhita Jyotish
It is the study of the influence of planets on society, country, natural calamities, weather and economic condition collectively. Example: Prediction of events like earthquake, rain, harvest, war, and epidemic.

Some major principles of astrology

Navagraha (study of planets)
Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are called Navgrahas. The position of these planets has a profound effect on the horoscope and life of a person.
Twelve Zodiac Signs
Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces.
Nakshatras (27 constellations)
The path of the Moon's revolution is divided into 27 constellations. Each constellation has its own effect and quality.
Dasha and Gochar (Periods and Transits)
Dasha of planets (their effect at different times) and Gochar (movement of planets and its effect).
