Bhai Dooj or Bhratru Dwitiya is a major Hindu festival celebrated two days after Diwali. This festival is dedicated to the love and affection between brothers and sisters. On the day of Bhai Dooj, sisters pray for the long life, happiness and prosperity of their brothers and brothers promise to protect their sisters. Bhai Dooj is celebrated with different names in many parts of India, such as in Maharashtra it is known as Bhau Beej and in West Bengal it is known as Bhai Phota.
Mythological Story of Bhai Dooj
According to a legend, Yamraj went to his sister 's house to meet her. Yamunaji welcomed Yamraj and prepared special food for him. Yamraj, pleased with this respect, gave a boon to Yamunaji that any brother who comes to his sister's house on this day and receives the service of the sister, will never have to go to Yamlok. Since then, the festival of Bhai Dooj became a symbol of the sacred bond between brother and sister.
